Zoloft & Spina Bifida

Spina bifida is a birth defect that occurs when vertebrae overlying the spinal cord do not fully form and remain open. This allows for a portion of the spinal cord to protrude through the opening in the bones and can result in permanent spinal damage.

Studies have suggested that taking Zoloft while pregnant may increase the risk of giving birth to a baby with spina bifida. A number of lawsuits have already been filed against Pfizer alleging that the company should have disclosed the increased risk of spina bifida and other injuries resulting from use of Zoloft during pregnancy.

• Loss of bladder or bowel control
• Partial or complete lack of sensation
• Partial or complete paralysis of the legs
• Weakness of the hips, legs, or feet of a newborn

Other symptoms may include:

• Abnormal feet or legs, such as clubfoot
• Build up of fluid inside the skull
• Hair at the back part of the pelvis called the sacral area
• Dimpling of the sacral area
