Recent assaults on the rule of law—targeting judges, lawyers, and law firms—represent an unprecedented attack on foundational American principles of justice. Threatening to impeach judges for their rulings, persecuting law firms for promoting a diverse legal profession that can serve the public in a fair and inclusive manner, and punishing lawyers for zealously representing their clients all represent unprecedented actions antithetical to bedrock American values. No American, no matter their political values, should tolerate these attacks on our legal system.
As lawyers, we swore an oath to defend our Constitution and system of justice. This oath must be renewed with actions and not mere words. When the values protected by this oath come under attack, we must publicly stand together to defend them. Today, Gibbs Mura joins an amicus brief that asks a federal court to permanently block a recent Executive Order that unlawfully and unfairly targets the law firm Perkins Coie. The brief argues that the Executive Order violates the First, Fifth, and Sixth Amendments and separation of powers by targeting lawyers’ freedom to represent clients and unpopular causes.
We are proud to take this step in support of the rule of law, and we stand firm in our commitment to the American legal system.
