Yaz & Stroke
Yaz, Yasmin & Stroke
A number of women who used the birth control pills Yaz & Yasmin have since reported suffering a stroke. While most birth control pills come with an increased risk of stroke—especially in women over 35 and smokers—the extent of the risk may vary. In the case of Yaz and Yasmin, it appears that there may be a higher risk of stroke when compared to other birth control pills.
Although women were often warned of the risk of stroke before taking the birth control, they should have also been informed of the extent and nature of the risk they were taking. In general, it appears that they were not informed of the greater risk associated with the use of Yaz & Yasmin.
The Dangers of Yaz
In the case of Yaz birth control, women knew that Yaz was a pill with possible side effects. However, it has recently been revealed that the hormone contained in Yaz—drospirenone—may come with much higher risks of dangerous side effects than previously thought.
These side effects include, among other things, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and strokes. This means that the connection between Yaz and stroke incidents may be higher than for other forms of birth control and contraceptives.
Yaz and Stroke
A stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain stops for one of many reasons, including clogged arteries or a burst blood vessel. A shortage of blood to the brain may also occur because a blood clot prevents the passage of blood. When this occurs, it is referred to as an ischemic stroke.
Yaz causes blood clots in many women, resulting in a number of complications. If one of these clots should cut off the essential flow of blood to the brain, a stroke could occur. In many cases, a stroke has life-changing consequences, because serious and potentially permanent brain damage may occur, not to mention the fact that a stroke can lead to death.
When a stroke can be linked to taking Yaz, the individual (or family members of the deceased) may be compensated for the damages involved. This could include:
- medical costs
- lost wages
- emotional distress
- pain and suffering
