What is the Porsche Taycan Class Action Lawsuit About: Defective Batteries Could Short Circuit and Catch Fire

The alleged defect causes the electric batteries in 2020-2024 Porsche Taycan models to short circuit, increasing the risk of fire, according to The Verge. An October 2024 article from Consumer Reports notes that Porsche began recalling some Taycan models in December 2023 and has since expanded the recall to include more models. Following the latest recall announced in September 2024, almost all the 2020-2024 Porsche Taycan models are affected. The impacted 2020-2024 models named in our lawsuit include:

  • Taycan
  • Taycan 4S
  • Taycan Turbo S
  • Taycan 4 Cross Turismo,
  • Taycan 4S Cross Turismo
  • Taycan S Cross Turismo,
  • Taycan GTS,
  • Taycan GTS
  • Sport Turismo
  • Taycan Turbo S Cross Turismo
  • Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo
  • Taycan Turbo

Our lawsuit alleges that Porsche has been aware of this widespread defect since 2020 but failed to disclose or adequately repair the defect.

Our auto defect attorneys are interested in speaking with Porsche Taycan owners across the United States about their experiences with their electric cars. We want to hear about battery issues you have encountered, if you have experienced electrical issues or a short circuit, and what, if any, information Porsche has provided you.

How do I know if my Porsche is included in the Taycan recall?

In November 2024, Porsche began sending out recall notices for certain 2020-2024  Porsche Taycan electric vehicles to more than 27,700 Taycan owners. The recall notice states that:

“Porsche has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain 2020-2024 Porsche Taycan vehicles. Porsche recently determined that individual battery cell modules within the high-voltage battery in your vehicle may experience a short circuit. This can result in a battery fire.”

If you have received a recall notice for battery issues, you are likely eligible to join our class action lawsuit. Read a copy of the recall notice here.

Impact of Battery Recall on Porsche Taycan Owners

Replacement batteries are estimated to cost approximately $50,000.00. According to the recall notice, a “full remedy is not yet available for this Recall, but the check of your vehicle’s HV Battery’s Health is available.” Until owners can get their HV battery checked, Porsche recommends that owners only charge their batteries a maximum of 80% of their capacity. This limitation reduces Porsche’s advertised range of miles typically available on a single charge. Porsche has stated that a full remedy, which includes a software update, will not be available until the first quarter of 2025.
